“a Good Man Is Hard to Find” Returns to the Stage in 2011 – Live and on DVD
David Payton brings his beloved stage play back for a new generation to enjoy.
Film producer, John Ewing, III of Vendetta Filmworks and Playwright, David Payton have joined forces to bring the critically acclaimed “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” back to the stage.
Touring nationally for over five years and with over 1,500 performances across the country, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” grossed over 25 million dollars, and has become a timeless classic in the African American community.
“It’s exciting to bring back what has become a beloved and celebrated story among African American play-goers,” says Ewing. “Women and their struggle to find the elusive ‘perfect black man’ have become emblematic in our community and it continues to feed writers and filmmakers today.”
Nominated by the NAACP in 1993 as “Play of the Year,” Payton hopes to bring “A Good Man is Hard to Find” to a new generation. “This play has opened before a theater of thousands, from ages 7 to 70; it is a story that seems to cross boundaries,” says Payton. “I didn’t grow up with ipods and social networks. I grew up at a time where I learned to live on the wisdom of my elders; my plays are an extension of that wisdom and this platform gives me the opportunity to educate by sharing what I learned.”
Payton’s inspiration for “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is based upon his own real life experiences. “I was in a marriage where I gave all I could to be a good husband and father, yet my wife was unfaithful. I took my experience of heartache and forgiveness and created a story that brought the reality of life, love, marriage and fidelity to the stage.”
In 2008, the theatrical film, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” starring Girlfriend’s Golden Brooks, was adapted from Payton’s stage play.
When asked what the difference is between the motion picture and the stage play, Payton explains, “The film is based upon the stage play, but does not contain the spiritual side of the message that many of the original playgoers experienced. Our goal is to lift up the name of the Lord, and you’ll only see this live on stage.”
Payton believes that urban theatre plays a very important part in the African American community today. “African Americans want to see and be entertained by characters they can touch, people they can relate to, people that make them feel like ‘home.’ The desire to see ourselves crosses all social economic platforms. On any given night, it is the one place where politicians, pimps, preachers, hairdressers and church ladies can share an evening of laughter, tears and spiritual awakening.”
