(UPM Tilhill, North Wales, 10 May 2012 ) – A team from UPM Tilhill’s North Wales office proved their community spirit when they donated their skills for the day to help the local church.

The Church of St Derfel in Llandderfel, Gwynedd, urgently needed help to make the improvements on the graveyard after vegetation and trees had become so overgrown that they were blocking out light.

UPM Tilhill’s team, led by Arboriculture Foreman Shaun Holt who coordinated the Community Action Day, strimmed the churchyard, crown lifted and re-shaped holly trees, chipped branches and section felled a tree as well as other tree surgery work.

UPM Tilhill’s District Manager Rory Chisholm said: “Rural churches are really struggling for funds to upkeep their buildings and grounds. St Derfel is an absolutely beautiful church in a lovely setting close to our offices. When the church approached us for help we thought it was an ideal opportunity to help the local community. They seemed genuinely bowled over by what we achieved during the day.”

Rector’s Warden Frances Dale said: “We were amazed at what the UPM Tilhill team achieved; they cleared, trimmed, mowed and made the graveyard presentable. They even planted two flowering shrubs just inside the main gates. We are really grateful to them for what they did which was more than we could ever have expected – it was a great example of community spirit.”

The churchyard clear up operation is one of many Community Action Days that are organised by UPM Tilhill staff across the UK.
